TA Training Fund FAQs

The TA Training Fund is a one-time disbursement of $500 to TSSU members who worked as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Graduate Facilitators (GFs) in Fall 2023, Summer 2024, Fall 2024, or Spring 2025. This fund aims to support any training or professional development relevant to being a TA or GF.

As such any costs incurred in attending conferences, training courses, or any other professional-development-shall be considered for the TA Training Fund. For the purposes of administering the fund, attending conferences in one's discipline shall also be considered.   Applicants need to keep all supporting documentation (e.g. receipts, conference tickets) totaling at least $500 for a minimum of one year, in the event they are selected for audit by TSSU or SFU. Digital copies are acceptable.

FAQs

How do I apply?

Fill out this application form.

What documentation should I save?

Receipts for anything that you believe improved your ability to teach (e.g., receipts for conferences (including travel), professional development training, training courses, workshops).

How long do I need to save my documentation for?

For one year, so for applications put in this summer, please keep your receipts until September 1, 2025.

Does it matter how many base units I had during my teaching appointment?

It does not matter, you just need to have had a TA appointment during one of the eligible semesters.

When will I receive the payment?

The process involves both TSSU and SFU. Both parties will process this as quickly as reasonable and plan to get the payments for Summer 2024 issued in the Fall semester. After this first application round, we will try to provide more concrete timelines in the future.

How will I receive the fund?

Direct deposit through SFU payroll. The deposit will be to the account you had on file with SFU for payroll purposes.

Is the fund taxable?

Yes, it counts as taxable income.

Can I opt out?

Yes, do not fill out an application.

How many times can I receive the fund?

One time.

How do I get this fund if I have already graduated?

It will be transferred through direct deposit, so make sure that you have access to the bank account previously associated with your SFU payroll. If you have closed your account, please contact payroll@sfu.ca.

What is the timeline for the training in relation to my TAship?

There is no timeline. Please keep records of any training you think may have improved your ability to teach.

Why isn’t the Spring 2024 semester eligible?

Unfortunately, Spring 2024 is not a semester that is eligible for this fund because general wage increases (GWIs) were applied during the semester. TAs who lost wages during the strike in Fall 2023 and who didn't get the same GWI in Summer 2024 are prioritized first for the fund.
